Jim Lehrer Visit

Tomorrow, Saturday, November 17th at 1:30 p.m. Jim Lehrer will be visiting Rock Point Books. He will speak about and take time to sign his book, Eureka.

Eureka is Jim Lehrer’s 17th novel. You might know him best from the PBS news show, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Tim Dodge wrote of the book,

This one, No. 17, seems to have sprung effortlessly from a brain teeming with Big Band tunes and toys from childhood, midlife career angst and satirical barbs aimed at the obligatory status badges and appliances of conspicuous consumption.

The event is free to the public, so head on down to Rock Point Books tomorrow to meet and learn from Mr. Lehrer.

Yesterday comments closed on the Fall Y’all Bloggy Giveaway: Chattanooga Edition, and I had 60 comments to read and smile at. I love how some of you have warm thoughts about this city. Some of you expressed joy at finding another Chattanooga area blogger. May I suggest you head over to Chattablogs to find some more? And if you have a blog and live in the Chattanooga area, add your RSS feed to the aggregator. We love meeting Chattanooga area bloggers.

Fall Y’all Winner 31

But right now you care about the winner. Well, the random number generator (customized) was told to pick a number between 1 and 60. And 31 is the number it spit back at me. Do you care that this coming Friday I will be turning 31? No?

Ok, the 31st comment was left by Jenny. She didn’t leave a blog address or I would link her. She did comment that she was coming to Chattanooga on Sunday and I really hope she enjoys her visit. It is a fun place, this city by the river.

Congratulations to Jenny! I sent you an email. If you don’t get anything, please leave a comment here. I want to get you your ‘Noog shirt as soon as possible!

Bluegrass on the Chattanooga Market Sunday, November 4th

This Sunday’s Chattanooga Market experience will be punctuated with the sounds of Bluegrass. You will hear the foot stomping tunes of The Possum Hunters, Retrograss with Brian Blaylock, and Hurricane Creek. Kids can enjoy taking the time to create with the Memorial Art Lab for Kids craft: Sugar Pumpkin Painting!

Every time I head over to the Chattanooga Market, I get overwhelmed with the creativity at every booth. From photography to woodworking, from crochet to unique handmade jewelry, I find ideas for wonderful gifts and additions to my home. And I can always find local produce from area growers to help me make it through the week.

The Chattanooga Market is open every Sunday, rain or shine, 12 noon to 5pm under the cover of the First Tennessee Pavilion on Chattanooga’s Southside. Join them for some fun this Sunday.

Fall Y’all Bloggy Giveaway: Noog Shirt!

Update on November 3rd: Comments on this entry are now closed. I will post the winner of the random drawing tomorrow. I hope you will return to check up on Chattanooga every now and then. And if you are a blogger here in Chattanooga, I suggest adding your blog to the Chattablogs aggregator with your RSS feed.

I had an absolutely glorious Chattanooga day today. It was sunny but not hot, with some nice breezes at perfect times. I spent most of the day outside, painting my front porch. I accomplished a lot and it really put me in a good mood. Such a good mood that I decided to give something away!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Rock in my Dryer: Reviews is hosting the Fall Y’all Bloggy Giveaways Carnival and I decided Chattanooga should participate in some small way.

Tonight I was in Mocha Joe’s picking up a vanilla latte (3914 Saint Elmo Ave). I noticed they have some of the fun shirts from The Noog for sale. Secretly I have always wanted one, but never ponied up the cash. Well, I think I want to give away one of their shirts in honor of this great city.

How does this work? Just head over to The Noog and check out their shirts. Leave a comment (one comment per person) here and tell me which shirt you think you would like. I will close comments on Saturday, November 3rd, 12 p.m. EST. I will post the winner on Sunday, November 4th.

And if you are in a commenting mood, just head over to the Fall Y’all Bloggy Giveaway and see who else is offering what.

Shopping recommendation: Blue Skies

This past Sunday I took some me time to head out and shop for a birthday present. I headed out to Frazier Avenue to take advantage of the unique and fun shops on the North Shore. I love to browse the shops like New Moon Gallery, The Big Much, and Blue Skies. Stopping in for some Clumpies ice cream or a coffee from Mudpie usually enhances the experience even more.

On this particular day my only stop was actually Blue Skies. Their unique collection of stationary, hand made items, and jewelry make it the perfect collection to find one of a kind gifts for almost anyone. In the back corner, there is a fun section for kids and babies complete with large U.S floor maps and Robeez.

I was able to purchase one birthday gift, one Christmas gift, a little something for me (a moleskin!), and some cards, all under $75.

If someone were wanting something unique and a pleasant shopping experience without the hustle and mayhem of Hamilton Place Mall, then I suggest Blue Skies. The Frazier Avenue shop is at the top of my list to visit this upcoming holiday season.

Neidlov’s Sandwiches Invite Chattanoogans to Love their Lunch

A while back I visited Niedlov’s new space on Main Street. It was a great experience, wonderful bread, and a great atmosphere. And this afternoon my email box let me know that there is even more than bread and atmosphere at Niedlov’s the next time I visit. They have sandwiches!

From their press release:

Niedlov’s Sandwiches Invite Chattanoogans to Love Their Lunch

Niedlov’s Breadworks, Chattanooga’s favorite artisan bakery, announces the launch of lunch.

A sandwich should be more than what is squeezed between the pieces of bread, just like lunch should be more than a quick fix squeezed into your day.

Expanding the in-store offerings at its new location, Niedlov’s has added sandwiches to its menu of breakfast pastries, barista eggs, coffee and espresso - and the naturally leavened, organic, whole grain breads upon which the bakery has built its reputation.

Like every loaf that comes out of the bakery, Niedlov’s sandwiches are healthy and delicious. The sandwiches use only the highest quality clean lunch meats, free of hormones, antibiotics, and preservatives. Adding cheese, vegetables, and spreads made in house, the bakery’s owner John Sweet pairs each combination with the perfect bread.

Coming up: Tax Free Holiday in Tennessee and Georgia

One of my favorite weekends is coming up fast- the Tennessee Tax Holiday!

The shopping for school supplies (including art supplies!) and clothing will start at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 3rd and end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 5th.

The state website has plenty of information on what is exempt from taxes that weekend, so make sure to take a look.

Since Chattanooga borders Georgia, Chattanoogans can get a head start on the shopping on August 2nd, when the Georgia tax free holiday begins. It ends on Sunday, August 5th.

Chattanooga welcomes Harry Potter at Rock Point Books

I got mine!Last night my husband and I got to share in the revelerie at Rock Point Books. Many Chattanoogans were there to get their hands on the last Harry Potter book at 12:01 a.m. We got there about 10 pm, enjoyed some muggle snacks, chatted with friends, and settled in to watch the action.

First there was the sorting hat, where a Rock Point Book employee divided the children into houses for the trivia game. They got to answer questions ranging from the color of Harry’s eyes to the three unforgivable curses. The house of Slytherin won, knowing most of the answers to the questions.

Use your Hamilton County Library Card to learn other languages at home

This week I finally paid a library fine from 1999 and was reissued a library card for the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library. I’m excited that I get to use the library again, and look forward to checking out my first book. But since I have a two year old, I will be even more excited when I get the time to read the book.

But besides the benefit of checking out books, I get access to other services the library has. Such as the Rosetta Stone language series.
