Errand Saturday: recycling and donating

Saturdays usually end up to be errand days for me and today’s errands included a stop at Chattanooga’s recycling center and the drop off box for donations to the American Thirft store.

We usually do the curbside recycling, but since glass was banned from the curb, we collect it for months until we can’t stand it any more. Then we gather it all and head over to Warner Park’s recycling center. It is really easy to get there and every time I am always offered a ton of help. I love that it is clean and organized. And the hours for Saturday (8 am to 5pm) are great for someone like me who doesn’t have a lot of time.

I know recycling in Chattanooga has been a hot button issue lately and I’m not trying to step into the fray on that. But I will be very sad when curbside recycling goes to once a month. I know that more area drop offs will be placed throughout the city, but I doubt we will use them. We will probably horde our plastics and cans until that once a month pick up.

After dropping off the glass, I made my way to Broad Street to get rid of some clothes.

Every season when we swap out the spring/ summer clothes for the fall/ winter clothes I tend to weed out items that we don’t wear any more. Those clothes end up in bags to head to a drop-off box on Broad Street for America’s Thrift Store (warning: music). After a week of sitting in my living room, those clothes have finally made it to the box. I should be proud of myself. Once our bag of clothes sat by the back door for a month.

In Chattanooga, America’s Thrift Store is partnered with Teen Challenge, so my donation of clothes will help the thrift store give back to our community. If I had gone to the location on Lee Highway I could have received a form so I could claim the donation on my taxes.

I know these are small things that can do good for our community, but every little bit helps. What kinds of little things do you do in your community?

[...] We always have at least 3 bags a week. That means if we wait for our monthly pick up, they will be picking up at least 12 bags from our house. And that doesn’t include the glass that we have accumulating until we can’t stand it any more. [...]
