Chalk It Up! in Chattanooga June 23rd, chalk art workshops June 8 and 9

What do you get when you put together a blank sidewalk and chalk?

In Chattanooga that would be the Chalk it Up! Festival, sponsored by the Hamilton County Rotary Club. The festival is a benefit to help fund art and education programs, including at-risk youth and children with disabilities, of Girl Scouts of Moccasin Bend Council.

The free festival is slated to begin at 8 am on June 23rd at the First Tennessee Pavilion. There will be a musical appearance by Flumpa, strolling entertainers, inflatable stations for the kids, artist demos and exhibits, food, craft vendors, balloon animals, face painting, and sand art. But the main attraction will be the developing chalk artwork around the pavilion.

Anyone can participate as a chalk artist (participation is free!). You have to fill out an artist entry form to indicate your artistic category (professional or amateur), your age range (elementary school to adult). Teams are welcome to participate.

The chalk art will be judged with winners announced at 4:30 pm. Tips and rules on participation seem simple enough, but as an added bonus there are chalking workshops coming up this week.

Nationally-known chalking artist Lee Jones from Orlando, Florida will be the featured artist. Lee will conduct free workshops at Chattanooga State in the Auditorium located in the Humanities Building and later outside on the sidewalk on chalking techniques.

Professional artists, aspiring artists, and those who simply enjoy creating art are strongly encouraged to attend one of Lee’s scheduled workshops. The presentation will include a history of street painting and instructions on chalking. Details will be sent out to all participating artists. Choose a workshop on Friday, June 8, from 7-8:30pm, or on Saturday, June 9, from 9-10:30am.

Questions about the event, can be directed toward Rotarian Vicki Anderson at (423) 877-2688 Ext. 227, vanderson@mbgsc.org or Girl Scout Rosemary Coleman at (423) 877-2688 Ext. 222, rcoleman@mbgsc.org. If you want to participate as a chalk artist, you are encouraged to fill out the form and send in asap.
