My top five Chattanooga choices for Mother’s Day lunch

When I was growing up, it seemed that Mother’s Day would culminate around where to eat. The idea was to give mom a “day off” from that thankless task of cooking a big Sunday meal.

Now that I am a mom, I get to be the center of attention on that special day (after I give my own mother her present and phone call, of course). I told my husband he doesn’t have to get me a gift because I already bought it for myself. But that doesn’t let him off the hook for making the day special. In fact, he better be thinking about this right now!

Well, he might not be thinking about it right this very second, but I am happy to help give him a few directions to take to make Mother’s Day special.

  • 1. Lunch at Sticky Fingers. The thing about going to a restaurant for Mother’s Day is that everyone will be going as well. I really like Sticky Fingers and think it is a great family restaurant, one that our two year old can sit properly in. Since it is downtown, if we have a long wait (which will be likely), we can wait at my husband’s office or in Jack’s Alley. And then I can enjoy their Jack Daniels Ribs with a side of cinnamon apples. Yum.
  • 2. A picnic at the St. Elmo Playground, lunch by Popeye’s. Sundays are busy with Sunday School and worship, so getting to a restaurant early enough to be seated before Monday could be tricky. If we were to get take out from the Popeye’s on Broad Street and have a picnic close to our house, we could eat quickly and get home fast for afternoon naps. Popeye’s Spicy chicken is really good and our family enjoys the dirty rice.
  • 3. We could take a drive and visit Fall Creek Falls for their Mother’s Day Buffet. From the Tennessee State Parks website:

Tennessee State Parks is pleased to announce that all eight state park restaurants will be serving a delicious Mother’s Day Buffet on Sunday, May 13. The Mother’s Day Buffet will be available beginning at 11:00 a.m. until closing at these state park restaurants: Cumberland Mountain State Park; David Crockett State Park (Lawrenceburg); Fall Creek Falls State Park; Henry Horton State Park; Montgomery Bell State Park; Natchez Trace State Park; Paris Landing State Park; and Pickwick Landing State Park.

We have been enjoying the beautiful Tennessee Valley weather lately. The sunshine has kissed my shoulders and made it delightful to be outside enjoying the birds and backyard. A lunch at Fall Creek Falls (the closest from that list) would be wonderful and memorable.

  • 4. Family style. This would be the Crumley version of the old Mother’s Day standby, “Dad cooks.” This would probably include something from Greenlife or Bi-Lo, marinated and grilled to perfection. Damon does a great job on the grill, and gets really imaginative with side dishes. If the weather turns sour, we can escape inside the comfort of home and play family games.

    5. A raincheck. It is true, I might like to have my special meal postponed to a later date. That is because I really, really want to have a meal at St. John’s Restaurant. But, that isn’t really the place to go with a toddler or in a rush after all the hustle and bustle of Sunday morning. To get a nice card with a reservation date inside it would delight me and show me that what I want matters too, not just what is easiest for the family.

There are lots of dining experiences in Chattanooga to enjoy, but if I get a special day all to myself, those are what I think would work for me.
