Penguins Rock open at the Tennessee Aquarium
Back in January I was excited to read about the penguins coming to Chattanooga and I can’t believe that they are here and being shown to the public now. The Penguins Rock exhibit opened today and thousands made their way to see the Gentoos and Macaronis. School children got to see the Penguin Keeper and ask her questions.
I love what the Penguin Keeper wrote about the Macaronis:
Olympic long distance swimmers are amazing to watch, but they would be no match for our macaroni penguins. These little birds spend more time in the water than on the rocky shoreline of “Penguins’ Rock.” In fact macaronis are swimming around about 80 percent of their lives. One co-worker even said, “The macaronis are like a bunch of 7 or 8 year olds that won’t get out of the pool.”
Penguins are a lot of fun to watch. I think they are playful and graceful and very beautiful. This Humboldt Penguin that I saw at the Columbus Zoo in April was just so attentive and alert.
The Tennessee Aquarium penguins need names, so there is a contest in progress. And if you want to learn more about the Penguins, you can check out their fun facts.
I hope to meet the new Chattanooga residents soon.

We lived in Chattanooga when the Aquarium opened. I was so excited about going, and one day my (then) husband and I decided that we would go, thinking it was opening day weekend. Well, dressed in our saturday casual…shorts, t-shirts, etc. we parked the car and start the trek to the front door, but as we get closer I noticed all of these folks in their nice dresses and tuxedos. I’m confused, but just assumed that there was some kind of function going on, and that it was business as usual, until we were stopped by a door man and asked if we were there for invitation only-grand opening. I was horrified. We did return later, as casual/paying customers and really enjoyed ourselves. We (minus the then husband) have returned and love it still. Kat
