Chattanooga Public Works Department checking out drainage hole at St. Elmo Park: Danny Grier says it will be covered

Yesterday I wrote about certain hazards at the St. Elmo Park. This is the same park where the playground will be built, beginning tomorrow.

As I mentioned, I did call 311 to report the hazards. A very nice woman named Wendy took my concerns, my name, and my phone number. She said that should would be reporting these to the Parks Department.

However, in the interest of honesty, I didn’t call 311 until about 3:45 this afternoon. My day got away from me and I got too busy to call. What prompted me to remember to call was an encounter I had around 3:30.

Danny Grier's Public Works truck at the St. Elmo ParkI went to the park to take some more pictures of the current goings on- there are folks from Learning Structures (our playground masterminds) plotting out the tree fort and starting the organization of materials.

While I was there, a white truck from Public Works showed up and parked in the parking lot. A gentleman got out and started walking through the park. He went straight to the drainage hole that I wrote about yesterday.

After a little bit, he walked back to his truck and wiped off his shoes. I stopped and asked him if he was checking out the hole and if a cover would be placed there. He said, yes a cover would be definitely placed there. I then asked his name. “Danny Grier.”

I asked Danny about the concrete footers and he told me he didn’t know anything about that. He suggested that the people putting in the playground would take care of that problem. I didn’t tell him that they wouldn’t, but made a mental note to make sure and call 311 as soon as I got home.

I am happy to see that someone was looking at that drainage ditch problem and hope that the city responds quickly to the other concerns. If you called 311 today to report these issues, thank you. And, if you see the concrete footers, the metal spikes, and the mysterious pipe as a problem, please call 311 and tell them that the city needs to take care of them soon.
